The winners of the first children’s book award in the world were announced

American author Tai Clare won the 2021 Newberry Prize for “When You Trap a Tiger” and “We are the Guardians of the Water” illustrated by Indian author Michaela Guadu won the Caldcut Book of the Year Award.

The New York Times and Randolph Calcutta, one of the world’s first prestigious children’s literature awards, announced their winners this year at a ceremony hosted by the American Library Association online, the New York Times reported.

The Newberry Medal went to Tai Klar for “When You Trap a Tiger,” and the Calcutta Medal for Best Children’s Picture Book Award went to Indian author Mikaela Guado for “We the Guardians of the Water.”

The book “When You Trap a Tiger” published by Random House Children’s Book Publishing tells the story of a hybrid girl named Lily who lives with her ailing grandmother. Meanwhile, a magical tiger, who is the protagonist of Lily’s local fairy tales, makes a special offer in exchange for restoring her grandmother’s health.

Claire, who is a Hawaiian-born and grown-up protagonist and a hybrid like him, was previously honored in 2018 for the publication of The Science of Fragile Things as the most prominent New Yorker children’s literature publication.

Michaela Guado has used watercolors, floral patterns and floral patterns in the illustration of “We Are the Guardians of Water” by Rorning Brook, published by Carol Lindstrom, and has previously won the Indian and American Children’s Literature Award for Best Book Illustration with Received the title “Salmon Boy” which was released in 2018.

The American Library Association also announced other important awards. Frank Morrison Book Illustrator Award for “Ehtram” by Carol Boston and Witherford, and Newberry Writer Award for Jacqueline Woodson for “Before the Ever After.”

The Newberry Badge is the first children’s literature award in the world, founded by John Newberry, an 18th century publisher. This award is given annually by the American Library Association to a writer who has succeeded in presenting the most outstanding work of fiction in the field of American children’s literature. This award, along with the Calcutta Award, is one of the most valuable literary awards in the field of children’s literature in the United States.
