Strange fashion show in Saudi Arabia
The Belgian fashion designer said that many people in the West see the abaya as a symbol of oppression and lack of freedom and do not understand its beauty.
A fashion show was held at the Belgian Embassy in Riyadh in collaboration with Saudi and Belgian designers.
In this fashion show, costume designers presented new abaya designs. Abaya is called women’s abaya.
The purpose of holding this event was to introduce the traditional abaya and turn it into an international dress. In the new design, the color of the robe has changed from black to other colors.
“We tried to use the culture of modernity in the design of the abaya,” said Belgian designer Christophe Buffyce. We hope that not only Saudi and Arab women but also women in other countries of the world will love and wear it.
He said that many people in the West see the abaya as a symbol of oppression and lack of freedom and do not understand its beauty.
“The media also covers and portrays the abaya negatively, but we just want to show the positive side, which is actually a very delicate outfit that can be accessed and turned into something stylish and modern,” Christoph added.
Saudi designer Safia Hussein also said: “We are upset about discrimination against the abaya and hijab in the West and we decided to design this dress stylishly.” When Saudi women go abroad, they usually take off their robes, but now it has become an international and stylish cover with a conservative design.
“I want to be proud of it when I go out in a robe,” he said. I want my sisters in Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries to be proud of it. I hope that attitudes towards Abaya will be positive.
